My webdev site

A guy at work has sent 1 client my way.

Also I was thinking of contacting someone I worked with at an old job about continuing a web project we had started there.

So I’ve decided to set up a business website to advertise my web design freelancing.

Be sure to help me out by refering people to me! Anybody you know that needs a website, or needs their website updated/overhauled, etc.

(contact me for the link if you’re interested)

Web Slinging (part deux)

Looks like after some minor IT drama word has come down and I’m now “officially” on the project.

While I don’t yet have all the responsibilities I’d like, my foot is firmly in the door as opposed to ppl just putting in a good word for me (which I appreciate, because it got my foot there)

Web-Slinging

So I decide to show up at a weekly staff meeting finally after missing the last two, and I hear the new guy Kevin (reminds me of the guy from Office Space) talking about a new corrective action program he is heading up, and he is going to get Sarah to write a database for it.

My ears perk up, I happened to have just learned a great deal of PHP and MySql in my ongoing quest to accumulate skills I will probably never be paid for on account of not having a degree.

So I decide for some reason, probably because I’ve been hating my job more and more lately, that I’m gonna pounce on that. I ask Sarah for this one project, to my surprise:

A. I get it
B. She mentions there’s an opening for this in IT and she’ll suggest me

Talk about getting more than you asked for.

Anyway, so I’m totally stoked and I stay up way past my bedtime throwing together the first draft to make an ever-so-impressive presentation about it to Kevin the next day.

He’s impressed, so much so that he mentions it to Terry (president of our division) who just-so-happens to be on her way to a leadership meeting with the other dept heads that very morning, at which one of the things up for debate is who are they gonna get to do their webdev.

I talk to her about it, she’s stoked, they’re stoked, everybody seems to be all for it. Apparently they’re already lining up projects for when I complete this one, and I have a meeting with some guy in corporate about it.

It’s an incredibly awesome and perfectly timed sequence of events. Really the only downfall is they are talking about it being a “gradual move” but I can’t say I blame them. “Moving the warehouse guy to IT overnight” has to be somewhere near “promoting the janitor to CEO” on list of dumb moves.

Probably I’ll have to balance the 2 jobs for a while till I’ve proven myself. It’s still cool. I can get hella overtime now too working on this (plus I actually enjoy it) so it’s almost like getting the title complete with pay-raise.

The main thing for me is that I enjoy it though. I may not even apply for that Post Office job I got tested for now, even though it would pay a lot better. Getting into this line of work has been a goal of mine for a long time now and it looks like I finally have the opportunity I’ve been waiting for.
