So I decide to show up at a weekly staff meeting finally after missing the last two, and I hear the new guy Kevin (reminds me of the guy from Office Space) talking about a new corrective action program he is heading up, and he is going to get Sarah to write a database for it.
My ears perk up, I happened to have just learned a great deal of PHP and MySql in my ongoing quest to accumulate skills I will probably never be paid for on account of not having a degree.
So I decide for some reason, probably because I’ve been hating my job more and more lately, that I’m gonna pounce on that. I ask Sarah for this one project, to my surprise:
A. I get it
B. She mentions there’s an opening for this in IT and she’ll suggest me
Talk about getting more than you asked for.
Anyway, so I’m totally stoked and I stay up way past my bedtime throwing together the first draft to make an ever-so-impressive presentation about it to Kevin the next day.
He’s impressed, so much so that he mentions it to Terry (president of our division) who just-so-happens to be on her way to a leadership meeting with the other dept heads that very morning, at which one of the things up for debate is who are they gonna get to do their webdev.
I talk to her about it, she’s stoked, they’re stoked, everybody seems to be all for it. Apparently they’re already lining up projects for when I complete this one, and I have a meeting with some guy in corporate about it.
It’s an incredibly awesome and perfectly timed sequence of events. Really the only downfall is they are talking about it being a “gradual move” but I can’t say I blame them. “Moving the warehouse guy to IT overnight” has to be somewhere near “promoting the janitor to CEO” on list of dumb moves.
Probably I’ll have to balance the 2 jobs for a while till I’ve proven myself. It’s still cool. I can get hella overtime now too working on this (plus I actually enjoy it) so it’s almost like getting the title complete with pay-raise.
The main thing for me is that I enjoy it though. I may not even apply for that Post Office job I got tested for now, even though it would pay a lot better. Getting into this line of work has been a goal of mine for a long time now and it looks like I finally have the opportunity I’ve been waiting for.
