2008 Arnold Grappling Championships

March 4th, 2008

A pretty positive experience, I had a lot of fun (which is why I do it). Got to beat a guy, got to do a sweet flying armbar. And I did things how they ought to be done, so I wouldn’t feel like apologizing to anyone afterwards (unlike one of the guys I fought).

No medals this year.

Oh, and the best part was after really busting my hump to make cruiser-weight, I weighed in at 195.5 (clothes on) which is a new personal best, down from 223. (This new years resolution is working out pretty well)

Also good was that my chiropractor fixed me up very well so that my recent neck thing was a total non-factor.

The only thing I would have changed is the MAJOR overcrowding problem. I’m no stranger to conventions but this was ridiculous. And going to the bathroom was like visiting a stadium full of Katrina survivors.

I would have maybe liked checking out some more of the convention too, I kind of rushed out to get home in time to watch UFC with my boys.

(and I suppose I could have done without the bruised ribs, heh)

I’ll post video later, got to rehydrate now from cutting weight.

Over-crowding

This is what happens when you don’t provide enough room for people and their shit. It’s a pile of shit and people.

Victories

February 19th, 2008

What a great day!

1 – Stupid vertigo seems to be improving a lot. I even made it through a whole class without it bothering me enough to stop! (That’s saying a lot considering I don’t always make it through a whole class when I’m well, but I was pissed off at it this time) I knew that shit would go away without a useless doctor!

B – Choked a guy unconscious in class, and brought him back using Kappo. That was the first time I’ve done that myself as the last time I ever choked someone unconscious was in Judo years ago and the instructor was 3 feet away to revive them. I was very happy to find I didn’t panic or anything and just did exactly what I was supposed to do and he woke up fine. (They usually do anyway, but I still did everything right)

III -  Got home and did my weekly weigh in. For the first time in god knows how long, I dipped below 200 lbs (I was 223 lbs at my last tournament). I’m 199 lbs. Go New Years Resolution!!!! (I’m sure this was in no small part due to BJJ, as much as eating habits)

…so stoked right now.

Gurgel Seminar

September 16th, 2007

I was happy to attend the Jorge Gurgel seminar Saturday. I forgot how much I miss those guys. I can’t wait to make it back to class regularly.

It still amazes me how much more there is to learn. Just when you start to think you know some shit you see or feel something and realize how much you’ve yet to learn. Hearing Jorge talk the same way, I know I’ll never run out of things to learn.

It was good to get back out on the mat, even if I ralphed my brains out afterwards (3 hours of taking turns, ramming your knee into each others stomach = my kind of people! lol)

Hughes Vs Gracie

Dammit

Hughes TKOs Gracie at UFC 60

LOS ANGELES — The passing of the Royce Gracie’s guard symbolized the passing of the guard in the UFC.

From the first moments of the highly anticipated non-title fight, Matt Hughes cornered, stalked and preyed upon UFC legend Royce Gracie at UFC 60 in the Staples Center.

Gracie, who was on his back for most of the match and used his legs to attempt to hold Hughes in the half-guard position, couldn’t contain the reigning welterweight champion.

Hughes passed Gracie’s guard and proceeded to unleash a vicious ground-and-pound attack to the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu black belt. Hughes mounted Gracie’s back, hooked his legs around Gracie’s waist and landed 17 consecutive punches to the sides of Gracie’s face and head. Referee John McCarthy saw enough and stopped the fight 4:39 into the first round on a TKO.

“In this game, anything can happen,” Gracie said. “I have a strategy, he has a strategy. It’s a matter of who pulls who out of his strategy.”

Gracie (13-2-3-1 no contest), a 6-1, 175-pound human that became superhuman when he continually defeated larger and stronger opponents over the years, along with his family brought Brazilian jiu-jitsu to the United States. Gracie was never able to apply any of his signature submission attempts on the well-rounded champion.

“Royce was looking for a no-limit fight,” Hughes said. “I’m a quick starter.”

Hughes (41-4), a four-time All-American collegiate wrestler, didn’t attempt to shoot on Gracie’s legs, instead the welterweight champion traded punches with the 39-year-old in the opening minutes. Gracie and Hughes eventually came to a clinch and the much stronger Hughes took down the three-time UFC tournament champion.

When Hughes did take Gracie to the ground, the 32-year-old champ attempted an armlock on the native Brazilian; a move that is a staple of jiu-jitsu.

“I’m glad that he’s learning some jiu-jitsu on the side,” Gracie said. “He’s carrying on the flag.”

Gracie appeared in pain, but the consummate champion who hasn’t been in the Octagon in 11 years stayed calm, straightened out his arm and escaped the lock which puts tremendous strain on the elbow and shoulder.

“The only way that I was going to get that submission was if John stopped it,” Hughes said. “I knew that Royce wasn’t going to tap, there wasn’t a doubt in my mind. I believe I heard some pops in the elbow, but there was no doubt in my mind that Royce wasn’t going to tap.”

The classy Gracie came to the post-fight press conference wearing sunglasses and a smile. He gave credit to Hughes, fought with an entire city in his corner and remained the most intriguing presence in the room.

“I have two more fights left in me,” Gracie said. “It felt good to know that I still have a lot of fans over here in America.”

Undercard

Dean Lister (8-4) tapped out Alessio Sakara (14-4-1 no contest) with an armbar submission, 2:20 into the first round.

Diego Sanchez (17-0) won by unanimous decision over John Alessio (22-9) in a welterweight bout.

Brandon Vera (7-0) won by submission due to a guillotine choke over Assuerio Silva (30-4), 2:39 into the first round of a heavyweight bout.

Mike Swick (9-1) beat Joe Riggs (26-9-1) by submission due to a guillotine choke 2:19 into the first round of a middleweight bout.

Preliminary bouts

Ultimate Fighter Season Two contestant Melvin Guillard (38-6-3) knocked out Rick Davis (3-1-1), 1:37 in the first round of a lightweight bout with a sweeping right hook.

Gabriel Gonzaga (6-1) won by TKO over fellow Brazilian Fabiano Scherner (5-3), 0:24 into the second round of a heavyweight bout.

Spencer Fisher (19-2) knocked out Matt Wiman (6-3) with a flying knee 1:43 into the second round of a lightweight bout.

Jiu-jitsu specialist Jeremy Horn (87-14-5) won by armbar submission over Chael Sonnen (16-8-1), 1:17 into the second round of a middleweight bout.

Lockflow has learned that the BJJ Grandmaster has passed away at a hospital in Chicago this morning. The reason for his death is still a little fuzzy, but it appears that Carlson was admitted into the hospital for prostate gland problems.

Carlson Gracie was considered one of the top fighters in his day and went on to become a trainer of champions. His students include: José Mario “The Zen Machine” Sperry, Andre Pederneiras, Ricardo Libório, Allan Góes, Murilo Bustamante, Stephan Bonnar and Vitor Belfort.

This is a huge loss to our community and Lockflow would like to thank Carlson for all he has done for us and our heartfelt prayers go out to his family, friends and students.

Royce Gracie!

January 20th, 2006

So I’m watching UFC last night and Dana White announces ROYCE GRACIE is coming back to the UFC.

His first matchup is Matt Hughes.

Should be good, the guy is a LEGEND. Having never before been a fight fan, just seeing him fight ONE TIME made me decide then and there I was going to be a fighter, a brazilian jiu jitsu fighter. That’s how I got into it.

Royce, the lighter man winning from the bottom as usual

Royce, the lighter man winning from the bottom as usual

That being said, this is just his return to the UFC, he has had other fights since he left the UFC. They were few and far between though. I hope this means he’s back in it for the long haul, not just one fight.

It was funny seeing them together, Matt was pretty respectful, which is out of character for him, but managed to make 1 crack about Royce being behind the times or something. He paid him a lot of respect though besides that.

Royce got the crowd cheering when he said “This is MY house, I BUILT it!” lol, that was great!
